Cash machines across Saudi Arabia are reportedly failing to accept the new banknotes issued last month, almost a fortnight since they entered circulation.

Saudi Arabia’s central bank last month released sixth edition designs of Saudi banknotes and coins to mark King Salman’s era.

The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) said the new currency would be available from December 26.

However, a bank source told Saudi Gazette that many ATMs across the kingdom are refusing to accept or issue the new banknotes.

The machines are reportedly unable to identify them because they have not been updated to accommodate the new notes’ dimensions and security marks.

The new notes incorporate security print features that make them less prone to forgery, SAMA said last month.

It is not known when the authorities intend to complete any necessary work to update ATMs.
