The one billionth ride was taken in Qatar amid the World Cup season

Dubai-headquartered Careem has successfully completed over one billion rides, with the platform’s one billionth ride taking place in Qatar during the FIFA World Cup.

The company, which started as a ride service provider in 2012, is now the region’s leading multi-service platform.

Over the years Careem captains have driven over nine billion kilometres across more than 80 cities. Pakistan has the highest number of rides taken among all regions at 299 million, followed by Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

“Reaching the incredible milestone of one billion rides is thanks to the hard work of our Captains and colleagues as well as the trust that our customers have placed in us. We feel blessed to have made it easier for people to move around and to have created earning opportunities for more than 2.5 million people. The opportunity ahead is large and humbling – our region is full of untapped potential and there’s so much more we must do to simplify and improve life for people in the region,” said Mudassir Sheikha, CEO & Co-founder of Careem.

Earlier this month, prior to the start of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, Careem announced that customers can now opt for inter-country travel from Saudi Arabia to Doha for FIFA World Cup 2022, via a Careem booking.

“Inter-country rides to and from KSA, to Qatar will allow residents to book a more affordable and hassle-free travel experience. Customers can book a ride to Doha only one day in advance, for a car that can accommodate up to three passengers,” the company said in an emailed statement.

The taxi service will cost about SAR1,000 ($266.10) to go from any destination in Dammam of Al-Ahsa to Doha, a Careem spokesperson confirmed to Arabian Business.

The milestone one billionth ride completed in Qatar was by Captain Razak Uppati and customer, Genera Tesoro. The captain was gifted a trip home to India and the customer was gifted ride-hailing trips for one year.

“I thank God to have completed the one billionth trip. I have been at Careem for about four years and have so many favourite moments. It’s the people that I get to meet from all over the world that I really enjoy. I have three children back home in Kerala, India, and I am so excited to see them soon,” Captain Razak Uppati.

Careem a few years after its launch was purchased by Uber for $3.1 billion and has scaled up with multiple services including shopping, food delivery and transport provided through the platform.

The platform has over 50 million registered customers and over 2.5 million registered captains who have been paid over $4 billion in earnings.
