Hotel owners and landlords who provide furnished apartments in Jeddah are not adhering to safety regulations, according to a report.
The Arab News daily said that some of them are randomly increasing the number of rooms in their buildings without authorisation, the Jeddah municipality revealed last week.
The municipality said that 59 out of 99 furnished apartments checked in the city violated various rules and regulations last month.
According to Arab News, field teams from the municipality make regular inspections of the hotels and furnished apartments to make sure that they are abiding by the rules and applying strict safety measures.
“The municipality said teams usually inspect electricity connections, security measures, early-warning systems, smoke detectors, car parks and emergency exists, among others,” the daily added.
Saudi Arabia, the Arab world’s biggest economy, expects revenue from tourism to increase 4.8 percent in 2010 as the kingdom tries to attract more visitors and religious pilgrims, the official Saudi Press Agency said last month.
With more than 9,600 rooms, Jeddah has about 90 percent of hotel rooms in the country, the Arab News report said.
