Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the ‘1 Billion Meals Endowment campaign’ on Sunday.
The new campaign is aimed at securing sustainable food aid for vulnerable communities.
“Brothers and sisters, as per our annual tradition with the advent of the holy month, we are pleased to announce the launch of the ‘One Billion Meals’ endowment project in Ramadan. Our goal is to provide hundreds of millions of meals sustainably for decades to come through this endowment project, ensuring ongoing charity for the people of the UAE and uninterrupted goodness,” Sheikh Mohammed said via Twitter.
The Dubai ruler said that one out of every ten people in the world suffers from hunger. “As believers, it is our humanitarian, moral, and Islamic duty, especially during the month of fasting, to extend a helping hand to those in need and feed the hungry,” he said.
The food endowment fund, which will be launched under the campaign is aimed at combatting hunger. It is also aimed at contributing to international efforts aimed at providing food safety for countries struggling with food insecurity.
The fund will focus on supporting victims of conflicts, natural disaster and crises from the world over, and further enhancing the UAE’s contribution to worldwide efforts to eradicate hunger, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
The campaign opens the door for institutions, companies, businessmen and individuals to contribute to sustainable humanitarian work, through endowment funds that support community and social development projects, a statement by Sheikh Mohammed’s office read.
The Dubai ruler also added, “a little lasting contribution is better than a significant amount that is eventually cut off. May Allah guide us all towards all that is good and protect our nation from all that is evil,” via Twitter.
