US giant General Electric (GE) will provide water treatment technology for the $550 million Palm Water-Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) Utility Project in Dubai.
Utilities supplier Palm Water last week signed a deal with GE Water & Process Technologies covering Jafza’s three planned water treatment facilities: a desalination plant, a wastewater treatment plant and a water polishing plant.
“GE’s water solutions will increase the Jafza’s water availability with an unmatched solution for the supply of potable water, high-quality industrial water, and wastewater technologies,” said Jeff Garwood, president and CEO of GE Water & Process Technologies.
Both the wastewater treatment and seawater desalination plants will be built in phases to match Jafza’s planned expansion.
The first phases of the project’s wastewater and seawater desalination facilities are expected to be commissioned during the second half of 2009 and be fully operational by 2012.
The facilities will serve residential, commercial and retail developments planned for Jafza North, Jafza South, Techno Park and Down Town Jebel Ali.
Palm Water was awarded the contract to design, build, own and operate Jafza’s water and wastewater plants in November last year.
The utilities supplier has similar deals with Nakheel for Palm Jumeirah, International City and Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Palm Water is 95%-owned by Istithmar, the investment arm of Dubai World.
In a separate deal announced today, GE Water & Process Technologies is to supply $20 million worth of mobile water treatment equipment to Saudi Arabia’s Al Tamimi Group.
