New jack-up project started by Lamprell

Self-propelled jack-up rigs for North Sea work being built in Jebel Ali.

UAE fabrication firm Lamprell Energy has cut the first steel on a new offshore project.

The company has started work on two self-propelled jack-up rigs, destined for operation in the North Sea. The vessels will be owned and operated by Seajacks International, which currently has the option to build three additional vessels of a similar design.

Speaking at an event to mark the start of the work, Seajacks’ John Ansell said: “Hopefully this vessel will be the first of a fleet, which will revolutionise [oil industry] activity in the North Sea.”

Work has begun a month ahead of schedule and delivery of the first unit is expected in the first quarter of 2009. The four-legged jack-ups will be used for well intervention and platform maintenance.
