The Dubai Harvard Foundation has awarded grants to two research teams in its latest move to build a research-friendly climate for local clinicians.
The annual grants of US$350,000 each will fund collaborations between Middle East and Harvard investigators in a bid to address the region’s priority disease areas.
The winning teams, featuring clinicians from the American University of Beirut, the United Arab Emirates University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital Research Centre, Saudi Arabia, will study galactosylceramide as a potential treatment for juvenile Batten disease and the identification of genes for human cognition respectively.
Dr Robert Thurer, executive director of the Foundation, said the grants were a step towards painting Dubai as an appealing career stop for scientists.
