Imagenation Abu Dhabi has begun casting for the first horror movie to be produced in the UAE. The state-backed film production company is looking for six male and female Emiratis or Arab expatriates, between the ages of 16 and 55, to act in various roles in upcoming movie Djinn.

“The story is based on a young couple who moves to a luxury high rising building, at the edge of the city. Dangerous things start to happen, as they find out the building is also home to djinns,” said writer David Tully.

Djinns are mythological creatures with supernatural powers in Arab and Persian folklore. Tully, an American living in Dubai, was inspired by a visit to the town of Al Hamra in Ras al Khaimah.

“Not all djinns are evil. There are very complex relationships between djinns and humans, and I explore that in the film,” said Tully.

Djinn, written by Tully in English, will be filmed in Arabic. The movie’s director is yet to be announced. Potential actors and actresses can register on www.emiratifilmstar.com, an online resource set up to assist Imagenation’s casting team.

Registration is also open to GCC and other Arab nationals living outside the UAE.

The film is unrelated to the 2008 US film of the same name.
