Supermarket retailer Spinneys has seen massive spikes in sales of baking ingredients and bakeware as people stay home amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to Spinneys commercial manager Tom Harvey.
In an interview with the Business Breakfast show on Dubai Eye 103.8, Harvey said that Spinneys has seen customer behaviour change significantly during the coronavirus pandemic, with people buying more on each shopping trip and increasingly buying ingredients to do their own shopping.
“[In the past] they were buying smaller baskets and shopping more frequently,” he said. “What we’re seeing now is people doing far fewer trips to the shops and buying larger quantities.”
Additionally, Harvey said that customers have been increasingly buying ingredients to cook and bake with themselves, rather than ready-made meals.
“People are finding they have a greater amount of time and are really enjoying the pleasure of cooking food, and doing it as a family activity,” he said. “We’ve seen such phenomenal increases in sales of baking products, and that looks like its set to continue.”
According to Harvey, sales of baking ingredients have gone up between 130 and 150 percent, while bakeware sales have spiked a whopping 280 percent.
“That’s just numbers from last week,” he added.
Even as restrictions ease, Harvey said that he expects sales to remain elevated, partly as a result of people being wary of spending money on dining out amid a challenging economic situation.
“People will be thinking about how they use their money for enjoyment carefully,” he said. “For food retailers, it’s a good time as we see an uptick in our sales at the expense of the restaurant industry.”
