Muscat extension signals Omani debuts

Muscat City Centre extension prompts arrival of predominantly new retail players in Oman.

Muscat City Centre, part of MAF shopping malls, has opened its RO 22.5 million extension, after 16 months of construction.

The expansion project has witnessed the opening of 42 new brands, its dedicated flyover and multi-level parking. The space has almost doubled in the move, from 33,036m² to 60,484m², bringing the total number of new stores to 63 since the start of this year.

According to Ibrahim Bin Abdullah Al Qasmi, general manager of Muscat City Centre, the move has created 300 new job opportunities for Omanis, reinforced the mall’s dominant position in the market and increased its market share.

The extension features fashion brands including Zara, Gap, Banana Republic, Forever 21, Fat Face, Aldo and Stradavarius. Designer brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss and Lacoste also opened at the end of September.

“The primary goal of this mega redevelopment at Muscat City Centre is to broaden the retail mix, and to expand our offering to our valued customers,” said Murray Bell, acting CEO, MAF Shopping Malls.

New food and beverage outlets at the mall include Italian cuisine at Biella and South East Asian food at Noodle House. According to a company statement, 95% of the brands are making their Oman debuts.

The two-phased expansion brought 21 new stores in February this year, and the parking breakthrough last month increased the mall’s capacity by 85% to accommodate 2250 cars.

“The innovative design and new retail concepts now offer customers a truly international shopping environment. This outstanding project is sure to change the face of retail in Oman,” commented Wayne Scherger, vice president, division services, MAF Shopping Malls.
