Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the automation and renovation of public parking machines across Dubai. The new parking machines are fully automated and paperless, issuing e-tickets by text messages as compared to the older vision of paper parking tickets.

The service was rolled out as part of efforts of the Smart City initiative and the Dubai Paperless Strategy.

“The latest revamping of parking systems in September 2022 marked the completion of the renovation of parking machines in all paid parking zones across the emirate. Accordingly, all parking tickets have become 100 percent electronic. The proportion of paying parking fee via mobile phones using apps and text messages has reached 80 percent. Payment via WhatsApp recorded about 9000 transactions per day. The daily use of RTA Dubai App has surged from 20k to 45k transactions per day this year,” Ahmed Mahboub, Executive Director of Parking, Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA.

“In 2024, a multitude of initiatives will be launched, including a smart payment system for multi-level parking buildings, automatic payments for parking buildings, and a business-specific payment system. Additionally, we plan to make parking services smart and proactive by utilising big data to visualise parking occupancy and projected rates,” he added.

Earlier this year, the WhatsApp parking payment service was announced which has now been overhauled by the Mahboub chatbot and Dubai NOW mobile app which allows users to pay using credit cards, repurchase a previously purchased ticket and display nearby areas on an interactive map.

Parking violations are also paperless and will be replaced by e-notifications.
