Twitter announced that users would soon need to be verified in order to use TweetDeck – a popular social media management tool – on Monday.
The company said that the change will come into effect within 30 days.
Enhanced TweetDeck
The announcement follows the introduction of an improved version of TweetDeck, featuring new features and enhancements.
However, according to a report by Reuters, it remains uncertain whether Twitter will charge users for both the new and old versions of TweetDeck.
Previously free, TweetDeck is widely used by businesses and news organisations to monitor content on the platform.
The decision to potentially charge for the service could offer a much-needed boost in revenue for Twitter, which has faced challenges in retaining advertising revenue since billionaire Elon Musk assumed ownership, the report said.
The new update also follows Musk’s recent statement regarding limitations on the number of daily posts both verified and unverified users can access.
Musk’s announcement received considerable backlash from Twitter users, and advertising experts raised concerns that it could undermine the authority of newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino, who assumed the role just last month.
Under the new policy, individuals will be required to pay $8 per month to verify their Twitter accounts, while organisations will be charged $1,000 per month.
