Gold smuggling plot foiled in India

The suspect was reportedly flying from Abu Dhabi onboard an Air India Express flight

Indian custom officials managed to intercept a gold smuggling attempt at Kannur International Airport in the southern Indian state of Kerala, according to media reports.

According to the New Indian Express, the incident – which comes less than a month after the airport was opened on December 9 – saw 2 kilogrammes of gold discovered in the possessions of a passenger flying from Abu Dhabi on an Air India Express flight on Tuesday.

The report added that officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) found the gold hidden inside a microwave over.

The suspect was reportedly taken into custody, along with several people who were waiting for him at the airport.

In another incident, a 30-year old man was reportedly taken into custody at Jaipur International Airport after having been found hiding gold inside his body, India’s PTI reported.
