Abu Dhabi buses will soon have automated ticket machines onboard, allowing passengers to use a re-chargeable card similar to the Nol card used on Dubai’s metro system.
Machines that will dispense the new Hafilat cards and allow users to reload them are being installed at main bus stations in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and in shopping malls.
Faster “swift reloader machines” that accept only cash and do not return change will be installed at bus stations as well as the Abu Dhabi International Airport and other locations.
Department of Transport executive director of the land sector Khaled Mohamed Hashem said the automated system would reduce queues to board and disembark from buses.
It is expected to be implemented next year.
“Following the rollout of the service, the DoT will work to equip the cards with further features such as mobile or online payments as well as the potential to pay for other transport related services including taxis, ferries, Mawaqif or even possibly to pay for other non-transport related services such as cinemas and football matches,” Hashem said.
