Abu Dhabi Municipality has said it has identified 3,142 abandoned vehicles left in public areas, public parking, and residential communities in the first seven months of this year, out of which 2,668 have been impounded.
The move is part of the municipality’s on-going campaign urging the public to avoid leaving vehicles in public places for lengthy periods as the unsightly practice mars the civilised appearance of the city, news agency WAM reported.
It added that the campaign reflects the commitment of the municipality to enhance the cleanliness and public appearance of the city, promote safety and security and curb the impact of environmental pollution.
WAM said amendments to the law has revised the notice period to three days instead of 14 days, following which an inspector will notify a vehicle-towing company to remove the often dust-polluted vehicle.
The law is applicable to all vehicles, including trailers, boats and others, which are all subject to removal to the vehicle pound at Al Wathba.
A fine of AED3,000 is imposed, and once the offender reports to the municipality, a settlement is offered, including the payment of 50 percent of the fine.
Should the offender repeat the offence, the fine will be doubled and daily impounding fees will be applied, depending on the type of vehicle and the area from which the vehicle had been removed, WAM added.
