DP World is taking one of Dubai’s most innovative port technologies global, investing GBP170 million ($226.45 million) in its London Gateway logistics hub to install the BOXBAY Empty Superstack system. First pioneered at Jebel Ali Port, the High Bay Storage (HBS) system was jointly developed by DP World and Germany’s SMS Group.
The technology eliminates the need for traditional rehandling, which is one of the biggest inefficiencies in port management and container storage. By removing empty containers from the main yard, BOXBAY allows cranes to operate at higher speeds and efficiency, directly improving ship and truck operations.
It uses fully electric stacker cranes to store containers up to 16 tiers high in an enclosed, automated facility, which improves yard capacity.
“This GBP170 million investment underscores DP World’s commitment to innovation at London Gateway. The BOXBAY Empty Superstack will boost reliability for our customers, minimise truck visit times in port, and create a safer, smarter working environment for our people,” said Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President, North Europe, DP World.
The new facility will be built at London Gateway’s all-electric Berth 4, with capacity for 27,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Completion is expected within just over two years.
Once operational, the system is expected to dramatically improve the terminal’s environmental performance and overall reliability.
