Sharjah has approved two major road development projects worth a combined AED150m ($40.8m), as the emirate moves to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and support rapid urban growth.
The decision was issued by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
The first project will upgrade a 5km stretch of the Sharjah Ring Road near the Etihad Rail station, with an estimated budget of AED90m ($24.5m).
Sharjah traffic plans
The initiative is designed to ease congestion on Mleiha Road. It will also include an expansion of the University City Bridge, adding four lanes — two in each direction — to enhance connectivity towards Rakan Bridge.
The second project involves the construction of a new bridge adjacent to the Martyrs’ Monument, at a cost of AED60m ($16.3m).
The bridge will create a direct route for vehicles travelling from Mleiha Road towards Mohamed bin Zayed Road, as well as traffic moving from Sheikh Khalifa Street towards Mleiha Road.
The structure will feature a modern, aesthetically designed form to complement the surrounding landscape.
Infrastructure investment
The developments are expected to enhance the efficiency of the road network, improve traffic safety and shorten travel times across multiple districts.
Once complete, the new upgrades and bridge links will provide smoother access between key areas, reduce bottlenecks during peak hours and improve overall mobility for residents and commuters.
