Another day, another TikTok trend. This time, it is #quittok.

Gone are the days when an employee would submit an official letter of resignation to their bosses, because this new trend shows young workers live streaming their resignation.

In addition to telling your boss you no longer work for them, these real-time resignation videos are garnering millions of views.

So, how did it all begin?

While it is not clear where the #quittok trend started, the idea of being honest about quitting a job came from TikTok user Marissa Jo or @itsmarisajo. Jo had shared a video of her quitting her job by video recording it in 2020.

Jo’s 35-second video, showed her making a phone call to her boss, and also showed how she felt after the call.

“It’s like an elephant took its foot off my chest, but I’m also sad. Onward and upward,” she captioned the video, which has been viewed over 200,000 times and has more than 3,000 comments.

Following Jo’s video, in July 2021, another video went viral after a clip of UK McDonald’s workers quit their jobs mid-shift, which some say marked the beginning of #quittok.

Today, the short-form video app is awash with videos of young workers telling their bosses they quit, and the hashtag has over 41 million views overall.
