Managers need to be more understanding towards working women, says Dell's Haidi Nossair
Balancing work and personal and family life is "mission impossible" for women, according to Haidi Nossair, marketing director at Dell EMC in Middle East, Turkey and Africa.
Speaking at the Arabian Business Forum, Nossair said women should prioritise family time as they do working hours.
“Work life balance is mission impossible. Nobody who is growing their career is working 9-5. You work 24/7. This is where we should talk about life inclusion. [Women] need to prioritise their family lives at the same level [as their working hours],” she said.
However, Nossair said managers should also be more understanding and flexible to allow for a balance.
“We go about our days in a totally different way than we used to. Because you can’t stop being a mom any time during the day, but you also can’t also stop doing your job. So women need to prioritize, [but] we also need managers to be more understanding, because we no longer work from 9-5. It's impossible,” she said.
Nossair, who joined a panel discussion on women in tech, said that while the UAE is seeing more women in the sector - with 37 percent of university students being women and 48 percent holding degrees in STEM education, the same statistics are not mirrored in jobs.
"When you look at the pipeline for jobs, you don’t see the same percentages. It’s still behind. It’s not growing fast enough. We still need to create an environment for women to grow in tech,” she said.
