Saudi Arabia’s military industries aim for $1.73bn GDP boost

Saudi Arabia’s military industries sector has undergone significant transformation under Vision 2030, delivering stronger national security, economic contribution and job creation, according to Eng. Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al-Ohali, Governor of the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI).

Speaking at the Budget Forum 2026, he noted that local military spending is expected to contribute more than SR6.5bn ($1.73 billion) to GDP by the end of 2024.

Al-Ohali stated that GAMI, which was established in 2017 and has been operational since 2018, has created a comprehensive licensing system with around 344 accredited local companies.

The authority aims to empower the private sector by providing an attractive investment environment and tailored plans aligned with military and security needs.

Over the past six years, he said more than 140 industrial and service capabilities have been developed. Domestic military spending has increased from 4 per cent in 2018 to 25 per cent by 2024, with local content reaching 40 per cent.

Al-Ohali added that the sector has generated more than SR4bn ($1.07bm) in jobs, with the workforce expanding from 25,000 employees to more than 34,000, 64 per cent of whom are Saudi nationals.

He emphasised that the military industry sector is promising and supported by a clear vision and unlimited backing.
