The head of the Emirati Parliamentary Division Delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, has emphasised the importance of cooperation among the world’s parliaments to create a safe and stable international environment, through innovative solutions to address international challenges.

Addressing the IPU’s 144th General Assembly meeting, Al Nuaimi highlighted the Human Fraternity Document which was signed in the UAE in 2019, and affirmed the need to strengthen international law and international humanitarian law to protect regional and international peace and security.

Under this framework, Al Nuaimi condemned the Houthi attacks against civilians in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, calling them a “flagrant violation of international law that threatens regional and international peace and security,” the state-run news agency Wam reported.

He also raised another critical topic at the meeting, stressing that climate change must be a global security priority.

“The UAE believes in the importance of finding creative solutions to climate change and will host the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2023 to encourage international cooperation in this regard,” Al Nuaimi said.

He also highlighted the key role of parliaments in countering hate speech by adopting legislation and tools for parliamentary monitoring, and supporting the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting dialogue and political solutions to international crises.

“The UAE is keen to draft legislation aimed at addressing extremism, hate speech and terrorism, including by establishing the Hedayah Centre and Sawab Centre to support the national and international efforts to counter terrorism and extremism,” he added.

In light of the UAE’s responsibility as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and as the president of the council in March 2022, the UAE Government, supported by the Federal National Council (FNC), is exerting all possible efforts to reduce tensions related to the situation in Ukraine and encourage the return to negotiations and prioritise the safety of civilians, he added.
