Qatar residents are set to get a much needed boost in the number of taxis in the Gulf state with the launch of a new operator and the addition of 500 new vehicles over the next five years.

The Al Million firm has won the bid to operate private taxi facilities in Qatar and will launch 300 vehicles next month, according to a report in the local Arabic daily Al-Sharq.

The new cars will be distinguishable from the current blue taxis, operated by Karwa, featuring maroon coloured branding and the name Million printed prominently on both sides.

As part of its contract with Qatar transport company Mowasalat, Al Million will also set up a central operating base and plans to add an additional 200 vehicles as part of phase two of its five-year business plan.
