Dutch woman detained in Qatar after reporting rape

22-year-old held since March after incident in Doha hotel, could be faced with alcohol and ‘fornication’ offences

A young Dutch woman is facing an extramarital sex charge in Qatar after saying that she had been raped while on holiday there.

The 22-year-old was at a party in a Doha hotel in March when she consumed a drink that made her feel unwell, her lawyer told a Dutch newspaper. She woke up the next morning in an unfamiliar flat, where she realised she had been raped and reported it to the police.

She was then arrested on suspicion of having sex outside of marriage, the BBC reported.

The woman is due to appear in court on Monday.

The alleged rapist is also being held, although he has claimed that the sex was consensual.

Doha News quoted the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying that the woman could face charges of fornication as well as an alcohol-related offense.
