Dubai Municipality officials are starting to narrow down a list of possible locations for one of Dubai’s new iconic landmarks, Dubai Steps.

New computer generated images of Dubai Steps were released on Dubai Media Office’s Twitter account, along with a link to Arabic language daily, Emarat Al Youm, which says that they are currently looking for the best location to build the steps.

Those under consideration are Union Square in Deira, Dubai Creek and Dubai Marina, but other areas are also being considered according to Abdullah Rafie, assistant director general of the planning and engineering section at Dubai Municipality.

Details of the 500 step project were revealed back in April. The completed Dubai Steps structure is expected to be 100 metres high – similar to a 25-storey building.

“The status of the project is for it to become one of the city’s iconic landmarks, which is aimed to promote culture and sports, mainly through its architectural design. This is the first time [globally] that such a project will be carried out.” Rafie told Gulf News

While many countries have iconic steps, this project will be unique as it doesn’t lead anywhere. The structure itself will be the attraction, rather than a means of reaching one. There will be rest areas to admire the view and relax every 100 steps, offering a beautiful space to have a picnic.

The concept is still in the planning stage, as the location and safety aspects need to be approved. Construction of the Dubai Steps is expected to take 12 months.
