Duolingo, the largest language learning platform in the world, has announced the launch of an English course for Arabic speakers.
Citing ICEF, Duolingo notes that Middle Eastern professionals with English proficiency earn up to 2X more than non-English speakers. Now, with the latest release, Arabic speakers will have access to English language education for free.
Duolingo, which has over 100 million students and is 100% free, works to make language learning feel like a game. It has proved to be a very effective language learning tool-a recent independent study by City University of New York found that when using Duolingo for 34 hours, students learn the same material taught in one university semester of language classes.
Duolingo is now being used by individuals, companies, schools and even governments around the world to improve language education accessible and effectively. Over 100,000 teachers use Duolingo for Schools and the government of Colombia is using it to improve English education in the country. The company is also responsible for the Duolingo Test Centre, a technological, accessible and convenient English certification platform accepted by international companies and well known universities.
Duolingo just received a US $45 million Series D investment from Google, who stated publicly that it is “changing the way people are learning languages across the globe.” Other investors include Union Square Ventures (who also invested in Twitter and Tumblr), Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, New Enterprise Associates, actor Ashton Kutcher and author Tim Ferriss.
