As of 2024, the United States is home to 37 crypto unicorns, representing 63 percent of all crypto billion-dollar private startups around the world. Notably, San Francisco hosts 14 of these companies, or nearly 24 percent of the global total, followed closely by New York with 13, an analysis from BestBrokers said.
San Francisco-based firm Ripple leads the way as the most valuable crypto unicorn both in the US and the world, at $15 billion. Ripple reached unicorn status on December 20, 2019, and has since joined an exclusive group of crypto companies valued at over $10 billion, known as decacorns.
Alongside China’s Bitmain Technologies and the American web3 development platform Alchemy, Ripple is one of the few companies in the crypto industry to achieve this milestone.
According to the analysis, there are currently 59 crypto unicorns worldwide, with the US accounting for 37, or 62.71 percent of the global total. Other notable countries include Canada with 3 companies, and the Seychelles, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India each with 2.
San Francisco is the top city for crypto unicorns, home to 14 billion-dollar private startups (37.84 percent of the US total). New York is a close second with 13, while Palo Alto and Los Angeles each have 2.
US-based crypto unicorns have a combined valuation of a staggering $127.23 billion. This represents 67.39 percent of the global crypto unicorn valuation, currently at $188.81 billion.
San Francisco-based Ripple is the most valuable crypto unicorn both in the US and worldwide, at $15 billion, followed by China’s Bitmain Technologies, valued at $12 billion.
In the US, the web3 development platform Alchemy ranks as the second-largest crypto unicorn with a valuation of $10.2 billion, closely followed by Digital Currency Group at $10 billion.
The peak year for US-based crypto unicorns was 2021, with 15 companies achieving unicorn status. In 2022, another 14 companies joined the unicorn ranks.
In 2024, 4 new crypto unicorns emerged, with 3 being US-based Monad Labs ($3 billion), Polyhedra Network ($1.25 billion), and Merkle Manufactory ($1 billion). Monad Labs, in particular, is the highest-valued startup from this year.
