Dubai’s $8.17 billion (AED30 billion) Desert Rose, a smart satellite city, is at detailed design stage, according to a senior Dubai Municipality official.
The project aims to develop a sustainable city for emiratis, adopting the three principles of a sustainable development – environment, economy, and socio-cultural. It’s part of the government’s major initiative to achieve sustainable developments by 2020.
“The masterplan is the same and has been approved,” said Daoud Al Hajri, assistant director general for engineering at Dubai Municipality.
“Currently, the consultant is working on the detailed design which will be take one year to complete,” he added.
UAE-based engineering firm Khatib & Alami has been appointed the consultant.
Designed in the form of a desert flower, the project will be built on an area of 14,000 hectares on the Dubai-Al Ain Road. It will have 20,000 plots for development of luxury home for locals while 10,000 affordable housing will come up for expat accommodation.
Although Al Hajri did not give a tender timeline, the first phase is expected to be complete before World Expo 2020.
The city, which will house 160,000 people, will have one metro station, and is likely to include a tram system for internal transportation. It will have resources to provide over 40,000 cubic metres of potable water and will produce 200 megawatts of power using solar panels.
In January 2011, Dubai issued the green buildings regulations and specification, making it mandatory for all governmental buildings. But in March 2014, it took the second step towards implementing the strategy by including all new buildings to comply with the green code.
Earlier this week, Arabian Business reported that detailed design had begun on Aladdin City, a project inspired by the fables of Aladdin and Sindbad, on Dubai Creek.
