The new UAE fire and life safety code 2017 will be issued next week with no retrospective effect, a senior Dubai Civil Defence (DCD) official told Arabian Business.
The revised code, which will be released at Intersec 2017 trade show, was initially planned to be released last year. It is understood to have been delayed to include a second revision after The Address Downtown fire on New Year’s Eve.
“We will issue the new code next week, but it will not be applicable to buildings under construction,” said DCD Director Operations Department Lieutenant Colonel Ali Almutawa.
He said the revisions have been made to chapters related to fire doors, building claddings and access for civil defence trucks to reduce incident response times.
The code was last updated in 2013 which banned the use of highly flammable exterior cladding panels, according to DCD website.
According to Frost & Sullivan consultancy, the fire and security market in the Middle East is set to grow from $1.6 billion (AED5.87bn) in 2016 to $3.8bn (AED13.95bn) in 2021.
Intersec will run at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from January 22 to 24.
