Four new universities are to be established in Saudi Arabia after King Abdullah gave his approval, local media reported on Thursday.
The universities in Dammam city and the provinces of Kharj, Shaqrah and Majmah, will be created by grouping existing colleges for medicine, engineering, computer sciences, architecture and design.
Oversubscription for courses at King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh and King Faisal University (KFU) in Dammam has forced education officials to look at creating new establishments
Higher Education Minister Khaled Bin Muhammad Al-Anqari said the new universities would help more Saudi youths get a better education.
KSU has 73 colleges in 15 provinces with a total of 120,000 students, while KFU has 38 colleges spread across six provinces and 66,000 students.
The new university in Dammam will encompass 24 existing colleges; the university in Kharj will include 20; Shaqra will take in 21 and Al-Majmma will cover 12.
