A Dubai-based consultant plastic surgeon and professor has highlighted the need for greater data and findings from the Middle East market to be published.
At the same time, Dr. Luiz Toledo has also called for greater awareness and transparency in the area of aesthetic plastic surgery.
Dr. Toledo, also a lecturer and teacher originally from Brazil, has been practicing in Dubai for the last two years and has been compiling various statistics and information in a bid to shed greater light on the approach of the UAE market to aesthetic plastic surgery.
According to his data, patients from 54 different nationalities are attending his clinic. Over 25 percent of his consultations, however, are with UAE nationals, 11 percent with UK nationals and 7 percent are Lebanese. The percentage of male patients attending his clinic, meanwhile, is 15%.
Dr. Toledo also expanded upon the most popular forms of surgery, stating that lipoplasty – a procedure to remove excess fat deposits – was at the top of the request list in the last year.
According to Dr. Toledo’s stats, 36 percent of his procedures were lipoplasty, this was followed by rhinoplasty which accounted for 12 percent of surgeries. Abdimonoplasty, rhytidoplasty and breast augmentation each accounted for 9 percent of his procedures.
Together with revealing his own findings, Dr. Toledo also called for greater exposure of Middle East statistics. “The Middle East does not have enough statistics on surgery procedures and does not publish enough, locally and internationally. It is my opinion that our profession should lead and set standards” he commented.
