Weightlifter Khalaf wins UAE’s first gold at Rio Paralympics

2004 gold medallist Mohammed Khalaf wins the men’s 88kg powerlifting competition

Mohammed Khalaf won the UAE’s first gold medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympics on Tuesday when he triumphed in the men’s 88kg powerlifting competition.

The 47-year-old, who also won gold at the 2004 Games, lifted 220kg to beat Brazil’s Evanio da Silva (210kg) and Mongolia’s Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar (210kg) at the RioCentro Pavilion.

The UAE have sent their largest ever delegation to the Paralympics, and the team hopes to better their three-medal tally from London 2012.

After a disappointing performance in London, Khalaf made his fifth Paralympic Games one to remember.
