Bahrain Int’l Airport expansion plan ready in July

Officials say new facilities to accommodate mega carriers will be fully operational by end-July

New facilities at Bahrain International Airport to accommodate the latest generation of superjumbos like the A380 will be ready by the end of July, it was announced on Tuesday.

Nayef Omar Al-Kalali, undersecretary at Bahrain’s Ministry of Works, said that work on the airport’s remote aircraft apron project was progressing “according to plan”.

The project aims to provide parking stands equipped with multi aircraft ramp system (MARS) which is capable of handling the largest airplanes operating in the aviation industry.

The MARS system can accommodate either eight large body and one small body airplanes or 17 small body aircraft.

Al-Kalai said four stands out of a total of nine planned have been handed over to the airport and are now operational.

He added that the final completion is targeted by the end of July.

“This project is part of the overall development plan of Bahrain International Airport, which aims to develop and enhance the efficiency of airport’s facilities and support the ability of Bahrain to compete in the aviation market in line with Bahrain Vision 2030,” he added.

He said the project was one of a number of new airport improvement which also include the construction of a new control tower and work to renew the main runway.
