Atlantis room rate cut ‘completely incorrect’

UPDATE 1: Dubai hotel rubbishes report it has slashed room rates by as much as 90%.

The Atlantis hotel in Dubai has rubbished a report it has slashed its room rates by as much as 90 percent from when it opened in September.

UAE daily Gulf News said on Sunday the average room rate at the hotel last week dropped to as low as $44 a night, down significantly from an average of $454 a night quoted when the hotel opened.

The newspaper said occupancy rates last week plummeted to as little as 26 percent, citing leaked official figures.

However, staff at the hotel said the story was “completely incorrect” when contacted by Arabian Business.

Staff said the cheapest room rate available was around $550 a night.

The $1.5 billion hotel on the Palm Jumeirah staged its grand opening on Thursday, which featured a performance by Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and a spectacular fireworks display.

The resort opened to guests on Sept. 24, despite a fire on Sept. 2 that destroyed the hotel lobby roof and caused smoke damage to the outside of the main hotel building.

The 1,539-room resort encompasses a 46-hectare site with 17 hectares of water-themed amusement parks, an open air marine habitat, beaches, boutiques and restaurants.
