Abu Dhabi Police has launched a new road alert system that warns drivers of bad weather and traffic accidents on the capital roads.

The system uses coloured lights to alert drivers across the emirate about hazards and is designed to improve road safety.

In a video released on Abu Dhabi Media website, it showed the details of the new system. It will flash blue and red lights together to warn drivers of traffic incidents, while a yellow light will be used as warning for bad weather such as fog, dust or rain.

The lights are visible from a distance of at least 200 meters and the system are powered by solar energy and internal batteries.

New rules have also come into effect under which motorists could receive fines of AED400 for travelling below 120kph on sections of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road.

The maximum speed on the route, which links Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will remain 140kph. The last two lanes, for use by heavy vehicles, will not include minimum speed requirements, police confirmed.
