Dubai Duty Free tennis championships wins players’ best tournament award

Dubai ATP 500 event picks up award for 11th time in 12 years

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships received the ATP World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year Award for the 11th time in 12 years in an award ceremony conducted on Centre Court this week.

The award for the tournament, which continues to draw the very best players in the world, is voted on by the players themselves.

World number one Novak Djokovic said Dubai is one of his favourite stops on the ATP World Tour.

“Everyone knows the fact that this is the most popular tournament of the year, as the quality of players and the organization is the best on tour,” said the four-time Dubai champion. “Players feel the most comfortable here in Dubai. You always have 3-4 of the top 10 players in the world here, so we are always on the top of our game here.”

This year’s event also features six-time Dubai winner Roger Federer, former Wimbledon and US Open champion and 2015 Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray and recent Australian Open semi-finalist Tomas Berdych.

Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman of Dubai Duty Free, the tournament owners and organisers, said they have always taken great pride in staging one of the most appealing tournaments on the ATP World Tour calendar.

“A great many people work very hard indeed throughout the year to provide the very highest standards for both players and spectators, and it is very gratifying to see our efforts rewarded once again,” he said.

The award was presented by Chris Kermode, ATP executive chairman and president; Alison Lee, executive vice president International Group ATP and Novak Djokovic to Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman Dubai Duty Free; George Horan, president Dubai Duty Free; Salah Tahlak, tournament director and Sinead El Sibai, vice president marketing, Dubai Duty Free.

The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells won the Tournament of the Year in the Masters 1000 category, while the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club London won the ATP 250 Tournament of the Year.
