Sotheby’s, the world’s largest brokers for auction and private sales of fine and decorative art, jewellery and collectibles, announced in a tweet, the record-breaking sale of Michael Jordan’s iconic 1998 NBA Finals ‘The Last Dance’ jersey, sold for $10.1 million.
The sale reportedly set records for a basketball jersey, any game-worn sports memorabilia and most valuable Michael Jordan item ever sold at auction.
The website estimated the selling value to be between $3-5 million, however, the final sale amount more than doubled the estimate, the final sale amount being $10,091,000.
Sotheby’s explained under the catalogue note of the auctioned item, Joran was seemingly unphased by the pressure of the situation (the 1998 NBA Finals), before he put on the jersey, the scene has since then gone to become one of the most iconic and viral moments of The Last Dance. ‘The Last Dance’ is what Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls is called, also the title of the popular Netflix documentary about the player.
The jersey was also featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated (June 1998), following the NBA finals, a copy of which is included with the auctioned jersey.
This jersey is now the most expensive game-worn sports memorabilia ever. It surpassed Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey from the 1986 World Cup, which was sold for $9.28 million, earlier this year.
