The UAE and Russia moved further to strengthen their strategic partnership, with the Russian foreign minister holding a meeting with his UAE counterpart for more comprehensive discussions.

During the meeting, which was held in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, the two foreign ministers discussed bilateral cooperation and the strategic partnership between the UAE and Russia.

The two sides also highlighted the efforts of the two countries to enhance prospects for more collaboration across all fronts.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit comes close on the heels of the much talked about meeting between the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg last month, during which Al Nahayan urged Putin to “reduce tensions and find diplomatic solutions to crises” in situations such as the war in Ukraine.

The UAE foreign minister also conveyed to Lavrov his country’s happiness in the outcome of the meeting of the two heads of state last month.

“The presidential meeting reflected the rapid growth in cooperation between the two countries,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said.

During his meeting with the UAE President, Putin described relations between the two countries as “an important factor of stability” in the region and the world despite all the difficulties that existed in the international relations.

The UAE has maintained close business ties with Russia and sought to refrain from joining the sanctions imposed by the US and other Western allies on Russia in the wake of its attack on Ukraine.

After the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah hosted a dinner banquet in honor of Lavrov, and his accompanying delegation.
