Embassy statement confirms closure, does not elaborate on information received.

The consulate of the US in Dubai was forced to close on Wednesday in response to "security information", said a statement by the American embassy in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi.

"Based on security information specific to the Consulate General provided by Dubai authorities, the U.S. Consulate General in Dubai will be closed to the public on January 21, 2009," said an embassy statement sent to US citizens.

"This includes the suspension of routine American citizen services and visa interviews."

The statement did not elaborate on the nature of the security information.
