India says scrap Valentine’s for ‘Cow Hug Day’

‘Hugging with cow will bring emotional richness’ says Animal Welfare Board of India in official statement

In a statement issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India, it was announced that February 14 is to be celebrated as ‘Cow Hug Day’. The circular has since been withdrawn by the board following criticisms.

“We all know that the Cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustains our life, represent cattle wealth and biodiversity. It is known as “Kamdhenu” and “Gaumata” because of its nourishing nature like mother, the giver of all providing riches to humanity,” the statement read.

The statement further highlighted that the benefits of ‘hugging with cow’ are emotional richness and increase individual, collective happiness.

The move took the internet by storm, users took to social media to share their views.

Soon after it was announced that the statement was withdrawn by the board “As directed by the Competent Authority and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the appeal issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for the celebration of Cow Hug Day on 14th February, 2023 stands withdrawn,” the withdrawal statement read.
