Oman’s Directorate General of Environment in the Dhofar Governorate rescued seven Risso dolphins, after it was washed up on an Omani beach on Tuesday. The authority also recorded the death of an eighth female dolphin.

“Seven of them were rescued in good health, while the death of the eighth dolphin was recorded, and samples and measurements were taken for it to conduct laboratory tests and analyses,” the authority said via Twitter.

Of the eight dolphins, seven were in good health, however the eighth dolphin reportedly died from friction caused by contact with rocks from strong waves.

The incident, which occurred in Oman’s Hasik district, was due to the dolphins been driven so close to the shore possibly because of a killer whale threat.

“There were no nets seen during the rescue efforts, and none of them had wounds on them at first,” Essam Al Busi, the head of the marine environment conservation department at the directorate said.

He added that specialists, citizens and fishermen had made several attempts to return the dolphins, however, these attempts failed and the dolphins returned to the beach.
