Italian football legend Fabio Cannavaro is coming to Abu Dhabi next week to meet and greet fans.
The 37-year old sports star, dubbed one of the greatest defenders of his generation, will be signing autographs and posing for pictures at the opening of United Arab Bank’s (UAB) new branch on Airport Road on Monday April 30 from 10.30am.
Cannavaro, who has played for world class club sides such as Internazionale, Juventus and Real Madrid, is best known for leading Italy to victory in the 2006 World Cup.
Nicknamed the ‘Berlin Wall’ by Italian supporters for his defending skills, that same year he won the FIFA World Player of the Year award, making him the first and only defender to do so.
In 2009 he also overtook Paolo Maldini as the most capped player in Italy’s history.
“For serious football fans this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get close to a living legend,” said Tom Smith, Head of Retail Banking at UAB.
Cannavaro joined Dubai-based team Al-Ahli Club in 2010.
After signing a two-year contract with the UAE Football League side, he made 16 appearances and scored two goals, before a knee injury meant he could no longer play.
Cannavaro, who is based in Italy but has an apartment on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, announced his retirement from the sport in August 2011.
He now works as a brand ambassador and technical consultant for the Al-Ahli Club, and is also a brand ambassador for UAB.For all the latest sports news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
