The director general of Al Arabiya has resigned following unconfirmed reports he was asked to stop writing his column for Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed is reported to have left his job at the Arabic news channel on Tuesday, according to Arab News.

He joined Al Arabiya in April 2004 after stepping down as editor in chief of Asharq Al-Awsat and is known for his criticism of Islamic extremism.

Al-Arabiya recently broadcast an episode of the programme ‘Islam and the West’ which was said to contain disrespectful comments about Wahabism, Saudi Arabia’s austere Salafi movement.

In it a guest suggested that Wahabi ideology plays a key role in why Islam is often associated with terrorism and violence, the paper reports.

Al Arabiya has issued no statement regarding the resignation.
