An insurance company said on Tuesday it had begun paying out on claims to businesses hit by a devastating fire in the Al Quoz industrial estate in March.
The Oriental Insurance Company Limited made an interim payment of 12 million dirhams ($3.24mn) to the Jaipur Electrical Group, which had nine storerooms destroyed in the blaze, reported UAE daily The National.
“The total claim is 30 million dirhams, which will be given out after the survey and assessment is completed,” said resident manager at Oriental Ranjay Verma.
Chairman of the Jaipur Electrical Group Mohan Gurnani said the company was one of the first to receive compensation for the blast at an illegal fireworks warehouse which killed at least eight people and destroyed dozens of buildings. Related: Massive explosion rocks Dubai
The fire caused around 600 million dirhams ($163mn) worth of losses, insurers estimated in March.
Owners and tenants of the warehouse were undergoing ‘tremendous hardships’ with stocks and assets reduced to ashes, Oriental said in a statement, adding that payments for remaining claims would be released soon.
