The Dubai Public Prosecution has charged British expat Francis Matthew, who is editor-at-large at Gulf News, with the murder of his wife, Jane Matthew, under the federal penal law, the Dubai Media Office (DMO) said on Monday.
In a series of tweets, the DMO revealed that the police received a call from Matthew on Tuesday claiming that his wife had been assaulted by burglars at their house in Jumeirah.

Initial reports showed that death resulted from a strong blow on the head with a hard object, which raised suspicion about the husband, it said.
Mathew confessed committing the murder to Dubai Police and was then referred to Juvenile and Family Prosecution in presence of legal interpreter.

He confessed during the public prosecution interrogation that he assaulted his wife and threw a hammer at her “without intending to kill her”.
The public prosecution is currently investigating the murder case and reviewing evidence, forensic reports and statements of witnesses.

The journalist has been in custody since Wednesday after his 62-year-old wife was found dead at their home.
Matthew and his wife were married in in 1985.
