Madinah prison has opened a new wing – hotel-style accommodation for prisoners’ family members.
Ten suites including a separate bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and lounge will be made available to relatives of prisoners who have been detained for at least three months, Director of Prisons in Madinah Sabah Al Zamhari said at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, according to Saudi Gazette.
Relatives would be allowed to spend time with the prisoners during the day and would be provided with free food, drinks and laundry.
The $13m project is to be rolled out at several prisons in a bid to boost prisoners relationships with their families as part of their rehabilitation and preparation for release, Al Zamhari said.
It is expected to increase prisoners’ morale and confidence, while those with more than one wife could alternate them each month, he said.
The accommodation is run by women trained in hotel management.
