Qatar to break record with ‘world’s largest key’

The 5.5m tall and 2.6m wide key is a symbolic representation of displaced Arabs, left with keys and no homes.

In the Gulf’s latest attempt to break a Guinness World Record, Qatar will unveil the largest key ever built during an event at Katara Cultural Village.

The key, produced by Evagoras Georgiou, is 5.5 metres tall and 2.6 metres wide and will attempt to beat the current world record for the largest key, set in Cyprus in September 2006.

The key represents a symbol of potential homecoming for displaced Arabs who have become refugees due to recent turmoil in the region, a representative of one of the organising companies, Ard Canaan restaurant at Katara, told Doha News.

“We are making this key to be remembered in all generations’ minds that where there’s a key, it’s a sign that someday we will go back to our homeland and we can sustain this fight,” the spokesman said. “It is not just for us. It is also for the generations ahead.”

The key, unveiling on Nakba Day, an annual day of commemoration, is meant to be symbolic for the region as Palestinians, forced to leave the state, saved the keys to their homes, hoping to return one day.

Qatar is host to many world records, including the largest soccer ball, the longest SUV convoy and the largest flag.
