Apple’s share of global smartphone market increases 20% in Q1 2022

The iPhone maker saw its global smartphone share increase to 18 percent by 15 percent

Apple witnessed a 20 percent increase in its share of the global smartphone market in the first quarter of 2022. Data presented by phone case maker Burga indicated that the company’s market share increased by 20 percent in the first quarter of 2022, to 18 percent, up from 15 percent in the first quarter of 2021.

Samsung saw the second highest growth in market share, increasing to 24 percent from 22 percent, a 9.09 percent growth. Despite Apple registering the biggest gains in market share, it still trails Samsung in number two position.

“Apple’s growth in market share is likely a direct impact of general factors like growing disposable income, development of telecom infrastructure, the emergence of budget-specific smartphones, and an increase in the number of new smartphone launches. Amid Apple’s growth, the smartphone space is still faced with challenges, including component shortages, price inflation and the overall economic uncertainty resulting from the pandemic recovery,” Burga said in the report.

The two firms market gains were followed by a drop in market share for other manufacturers, with Oppo and Vivo both dropping 20 percent. Xiaomi also saw a drop of 7.14 percent.

The report called out supply shortages as the chief reason behind a decline in market share for manufacturers. How firms respond to these challenges in the future, such as by moving semiconductor manufacturing inhouse, will be key in maintaining, or gaining, market share moving forward.

The manufacturer’s market share represents sales in shipment estimates released in April 2022. Data on smartphone market share is provided by the technology market analyst firm Canalys.
