Generative AI platform Google Bard is attracting a higher number of new users compared to ChatGPT but it is still not on pace to overtake the OpenAI platform, a new report finds.

Over the past two months, Google Bard has become the fastest-growing AI app, currently adding users at a rate of 7.1 percent per week, while ChatGPT lags behind at 1.6 percent, Netskope said in a statement announcing its latest report on Thursday.

At this rate, Google Bard is still not poised to catch up to ChatGPT for over a year, but the generative AI app space is expected to evolve significantly before then, with many more apps in development, the cybersecurity company said.

AI app usage has grown rapidly since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform in November last year. Based on data from millions of enterprise users globally, Netskope found that app usage rose by 22.5 percent over the past two months.

Organisations with 10,000 users or more now use an average of five AI apps a day, with ChatGPT seeing more than eight times as many daily active users as any other generative AI app. Netskope estimates that at this current growth rate, users accessing AI apps will double within the next seven months.

This amplifies the chances of users potentially exposing sensitive data.

“It is inevitable that some users will upload proprietary source code or text containing sensitive data to AI tools that promise to help with programming or writing,” Ray Canzanese, Threat Research Director of Netskope Threat Labs, said in a statement.

“Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to place controls around AI to prevent sensitive data leaks. Controls that empower users to reap the benefits of AI, streamlining operations and improving efficiency, while mitigating the risks are the ultimate goal. The most effective controls that we see are a combination of DLP and interactive user coaching.”
