The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has agreed to grant a 10-year licence for mobile TV broadcasting services to the Emirates Mobile Television Corporation consortium.
The consortium has also bee granted exclusive rights to provide broadcast mobile TV for five years, ending on December 31, 2014, WAM news agency reported.
Under the licence, which is the first of its kind to be issued in the region, at least 13 channels will be provided to subscribers through different mobile phone packages.
The service is expected to start in the fourth quarter of next year.
“By this license the TRA succeeded to bring together the main players in Media and Telecommunication sectors to form a partnership to provide such services in the country, the UAE companies of the two sectors considered to be the leaders in the region,” Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA director general said.
The licence has an acquisition fee of AED17m and will be officially signed in November, the news agency said.
The mobile TV service will be run by DVB-H technology, a feature already on many mobile phones which allows the reception of live TV broadcasting.
