A Bahraini teenager has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for defaming the King on social media website Twitter, according to Gulf Daily News.
The teen had set up several Twitter accounts using pseudonyms, including one under the name of “Awal Pearl”, which was used to post false news about incidents in Bahrain, according to court documents.
Articles insulting King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa also were posted on other Twitter accounts.
Police tracked down the teenager and arrested him at his home in Manama.
According to the court, he confessed to posting pictures and articles about illegal gatherings, but denied insulting the King.
He was convicted and jailed for two years for defaming the King and six months for misusing telecommunication technologies.
Authorities also confiscated the computer used in the offences.
